Urgent · PHP2Shell · CVSS 9.2 · Korean cyber threat level: ‘Caution’

Once you’re breached, it’s over.
Customer data, orders, admin accounts
all of it gets stolen.

No username needed. No password needed. A single crafted request lets a hacker run any command they want on your server. The exploit code is already public on the internet, and attack attempts are still coming in right now.

It’s been - days since the first attack was spotted (Oct 17).

01 / If You Wait

“Who would target a small company like ours?”
Attackers don’t pick their targets by hand.

Attacks are being launched in bulk across the entire internet, indiscriminately (millions of exploit attempts, press reports). In Korea alone, an estimated 110,000 servers run a vulnerable PHP version (AhnLab survey, pre-patch estimate). Government emergency advisories go mainly to companies that have registered a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), so small businesses have to look after themselves.

72 hours

Under Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act, once you learn of a personal data leak you must notify customers within 72 hours — and if it was caused by hacking, report it to the Personal Information Protection Commission or KISA.

Up to KRW 30 million

Failing to report a leak makes you liable for an administrative fine.

Up to 3% of revenue

If data leaks because you didn’t take adequate safeguards, you can be hit with a penalty surcharge of up to 3% of your total revenue.

Basis: Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act, Articles 34, 64-2 and 75, and its Enforcement Decree, Articles 39 and 40 (Easy-to-Find Korean Law (easylaw.go.kr), Personal Information Protection Commission)

Patched and done? No.

The government advises that even servers that have been updated should be checked separately for abnormal access records and installed web shells. A hacker who got in before the patch is not kicked out by the patch.

02 / The Threat

Attackers break into your server without logging in. Up to 70% of the world’s websites are exposed (press reports).

The flaw is in the PHP engine itself, so even a well-built website offers no protection. Public exploit code and attack attempts have already been reported.

  1. Oct 17First exploit attempts caught by Amazon’s sensor network — 4 days before public disclosure
  2. Oct 20Vulnerability details leaked online
  3. Oct 21PHP releases emergency patches (8.5.12 · 8.4.27 · 8.3.36 · 8.2.35). Public exploit code appears; millions of exploit attempts (press reports)
  4. Oct 22Korean government raises the private-sector cyber threat level from ‘Attention’ to ‘Caution’
What’s at risk
Remote takeover, no login needed

A single crafted request runs arbitrary commands on your server — leading to web shell installation, customer data leaks, website defacement and intrusion into your internal network.

Who’s affected
PHP 5.4 – 8.5.11

Virtually every PHP release since 2012. GNUBoard, YoungCart, WordPress, Rhymix and custom-built sites are all affected.

Why now
Exploit code already public

Attack attempts using the public exploit code are ongoing. Updating alone isn’t enough — the fix only takes effect once the web server (PHP-FPM · Apache) is restarted.

Safe baseline versions 8.5.128.4.278.3.368.2.35 or later + web server restart

PHP 8.1 and earlier have no official patch. PHP 8.2 also reaches end of support at the end of 2026, so we recommend migrating to 8.3 or later. If you don’t restart the web server after updating, the old version keeps running.

03 / Check My Site

If even one of these applies, you’re at risk right now.

Every site built on PHP is affected. Most Korean websites and online stores run on PHP — and using shared web hosting doesn’t make you safe.

These sites need action today

  • Sites built on GNUBoard, YoungCart, WordPress or Rhymix
  • Websites and online stores built by an agency with no one maintaining them
  • Dedicated server hosting, VPS, cloud or self-hosted servers
  • Running legacy PHP 5.x · 7.x · 8.1 or earlier
  • Sites that store member, order or payment data
  • Sites recently showing slowdowns, 500 errors or unfamiliar files

Why shared web hosting can’t give you peace of mind

  • PHP 8.1 and earlier get no official update, so you need to confirm separately how far your hosting provider has gone
  • If the web server isn’t restarted after updating, the old version keeps running
  • Malicious files (web shells) planted before your host patched remain even after patching
  • Your host manages only the server. Checking your site files and admin accounts is up to you
  • Attack attempts were observed from Oct 17 (reported by Amazon), so there was an exposure window before patches arrived

30-Second Self-Check

Just enter your website address. We actually visit the site to check whether it uses PHP, which version is exposed and what security protections are in place, then show you a risk rating. No attacks or intrusion — we read only the home page, exactly like a normal visitor.

Try it with naver.com, coupang.com or wordpress.org.

04 / Our Approach

A patch alone isn’t enough. We defend in four layers.

The right measures depend on your server environment and whether you’ve already been compromised. After a diagnosis, we quote only what you actually need.

STEP A · 1–2 hours

Emergency Shield

We place a Cloudflare security proxy in front of your site to filter attack requests before they reach your server. No changes to the server itself, so it’s the fastest option.

  • Web application firewall (WAF) rules, blocking of suspicious upload requests
  • Server origin IP hidden + access allowed only via Cloudflare
  • Account created in your name — you retain ownership
Best whenserver work isn’t possible right away, or you need to buy time until patching
STEP B · Same day

Server Patching & Configuration

We upgrade PHP to a fixed version, apply mitigation settings, then restart the web server and verify the version actually running.

  • Fixed PHP 8.2–8.5 releases / distribution backport packages
  • Temporary mitigation settings, such as disabling session.upload_progress
  • PHP-FPM and Apache restart with verification
Best whenyou manage your own server — in every case (the root-cause fix)
STEP C · 1–2 days

Compromise Inspection

We check whether attackers already got in during the pre-patch exposure window, analyzing logs and files to find and remove web shells.

  • Analysis of access and error logs since Oct 17
  • Detection and removal of web shells and tampered files
  • Support for rotating DB passwords and API keys
  • Processed on our own analysis equipment — customer data is never sent to external AI services
Best whenthe server was internet-facing before Oct 20, or showed unusual symptoms
STEP D · 2–5 days

Legacy Migration & Clean Rebuild

We move unpatched PHP 5, 7 and 8.1 to 8.3 or later. Compromised servers aren’t repaired — they’re rebuilt clean on a new server.

  • Site compatibility testing in advance on a copy environment
  • Compatibility fixes for GNUBoard, YoungCart and WordPress
  • New server build, data migration and verification of key features
Best whenrunning PHP 8.1 or earlier, a breach is confirmed, or upgrading breaks the site

08 / FAQ

Common questions

I use Cafe24 or Gabia web hosting. Do I still need this?

Yes. Your hosting provider manages only the server’s PHP. PHP 8.1 and earlier get no official update, and malicious files planted before patching aren’t removed by the patch. We also take care of checking your site files and admin accounts, and fixing anything that breaks when the version is upgraded.

Will updating GNUBoard or WordPress to the latest version fix it?

No. The flaw is in the server’s PHP engine. Even if you update your website software, you remain vulnerable as long as the server’s PHP is unchanged.

Is patching all it takes?

If a web shell was planted during the pre-patch exposure window, hackers can keep coming and going even after you patch. If your server was online before Oct 20, we recommend a compromise inspection and rotating passwords and keys.

Will my site go down during the work?

The shield (A) causes almost no downtime. Server patching needs a restart that takes a few seconds to a few minutes. We can schedule it outside your business hours.

How do I share server access details?

Once the quote is confirmed, we receive them through a separate secure channel your contact person will provide. Never put passwords in the inquiry form, text messages or messengers. After the work, we’ll advise you to change your passwords.

Can you issue a tax invoice?

Yes. Provide your business details at payment and we’ll issue one.

Every day you put this off is another opportunity for hackers.

If you don’t check today, the next thing you see may be angry calls from customers — and a data breach report to file.
